Blog # 2

This gladiator trailer is an accurate and entertained representation of the Three Act Structure (Set Up, Development and Resolution) of this film. The editor shows the most important dramatic beats of every stage of the film, causing emotional impact, but at the same time narrating the story continuously.
The beginning of the trailer sets up the tone of the story. There is classical music on the background, which is clearly dramatic, letting us know that the movie is a drama. One of the first shots we see is a Close up of Maximus showing his confidence and strength, which lets us know that he is most likely the main character. After that we hear of screen that someone says; I am dying, then we hear that the emperor is telling Maximus that he will have the power of Rome. At this point we know the importance of Maximus in the film. Suddenly, different shots of the Emperor’s son are shown and we see the Emperor telling his son that he won’t be the next Emperor, at this point there is a striking Jump Cut of the emperor’s son, which drives our attention to him. Later in the trailer we realize he killed his own father, and we realize that he is the antagonist who is going to make Maximus’ life impossible.
This was the set up of the movie and now we know the main conflict in the film; Commodus, the new Emperor killed his own father to attain the power of Rome and then ordered to kill Maximus who was chosen by Commodus’ father to be the new Emperor. After the first minute of the trailer, the editor starts to show scenes of the development (second stage) of the film, where Maximus manages to survive and fights with the intention to meet Commodus and get revenge. The trailer shows this part of the film with intense music and action scenes, which enhance the fight scenes, where the audience is supposed to be excited and get attached to the main character who has lost everything in his life.
At the end of the trailer the music stops and we realize that Maximo achieves his goal of meeting Commodus. Unfortunately, we do not know what happens that is why it is a trailer, it is made with the intention to persuade the audience to go and watch the movie.
